prayer team - sermon notes for Sunday Nov. 23

Making our Beliefs Live: Apostle’s Creed Conclusion – selected texts

Point of teaching – to call the church to act on the declarations made by the creed –

Context: the creed is stated in the form of the three persons of the godhead – So far we’ve declared what the church believes about God the Father, and Christ the Son – now we move to the Holy Spirit and the very personal and practical implications the HS has on our lives today

I. The Holy Spirit

A) declaration – Acts 1:8 – you shall receive power when the HS has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses – by saying that we believe in the HS we are declaring the HS is the source of power for our transformation. (NB: witness is a noun here – iow: you will BECOME DIFFERENT PEOPLE once the HS has come) of course, the perfect illustration of that is Peter – before the HS: fearful/lying/self-condeming/disengaged/ shame-filled. After: powerful – fruitful – fearless. THE SOURCE OF THE CHANGE?? – not a mantra, or a meditation, or a new set of ethics, but rather the HS.

B) application – the Holy Spirit is our source of strength for 1) making the Christian life real – already seen in Acts 1:8, it’s also visible in 2) bringing fruit into and through our lives – there are many examples of this but a clear example is seen in John 14:25-27. PEACE and the absence of FEAR are fruits that germinate in our lives when the Holy Spirit is present and has reign 3) as a result we’re called to be filled w/ the spirit and not grieve the spirit – what does this filling require???

There’s a great debate about the answer to that question – and I don’t claim to have the full answer to that question, but our help comes from Ephesians 5: 18 – note that Paul doesn’t say “YOU ARE FILLED” he says, ‘be filled’ – HOW?

1) If I’m carrying greed, lust, bitterness, fear – and I know I’m carrying it, and I’m unwilling to let go of it – Ephesians tells me that I’m grieving the Holy Spirit – this grieving prevents the HS from taking control of our lives, which is the real meaning of being filled w/ the spirit –

2) If I’ve never thought about the Holy Spirit – never asked for the Holy Spirit to take complete control of my life by filling me – than although the spirit is there, I’ve not yet let go of my life and given the HS control. – NB: this is the source of endless frustration for many believers --

Illus: MOODY – I know that there are many questions about this – but I’d invite you to clear out the clutter and ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit – and to keep asking until you KNOW THAT YOU KNOW that the Holy Spirit is living in you! Finally give thanks – for what God WILL DO through you – and go out into the world w/ confidence that God will be at work. ILLUS: RD --

II. The Holy Catholic Church and Communion of Saints

A) declaration I Cor. 12:12 - don’t get hung up on the word Catholic – it means the global church – it means that God is at work in churches that have many different flavors – PUNK OR MONK… is the way I like to say it. But the important thing to see is that we’re declaring that Christ is made visible in this age through the gathered people of God – expressing His character through their life together and through their worship. IOW: while Jesus IS your personal savior, being your personal savior isn’t the point – you’re called into community.

B) application – we’re called to global connectedness (see I Cor. 16): in this passage Paul is inviting a Gentile church to take up an offering for a Jewish church – this is exemplary because these two churches DON’T AGREE ON EVERYTHING… and yet the calling is to care for one another because both are expressions of Christ’s life. Thinking that ‘we’re the only ones doing it right’ is a BIG PROBLEM… illus: church of Seattle -- local commitment (see I Cor. 12) – you ARE the body of Christ – and as such your calling will finds its fullest expression through a commitment to ONE local church – that doesn’t mean churches shouldn’t work together – we want to explore how to work w/ all the church in the Aurora corridor to serve this area of our city so the Christ’s light can shine – but while we all work together, the way Paul writes his letters indicates that our calling is to COMMIT TO A COMMUNITY – because it’s in active loving relationships and the use of our gifts that Christ is made visible. APP: this is the why of membership – in an era of spiritual consumerism, membership is a radical decision – it’s a way of saying, similarly to marriage: I’m done shopping – I’m going to commit to a community. NB: we need to fight against the consumerist spirit of the age and one of the ways we can do this is by membership

III. The Forgiveness of Sins

A) declaration – we believe that all sins are forgiven – I Jn. 2:1 – the reason this was in the creed had to do w/ people who had renounced their faith during the times of persecution. When the persecution ended they wanted back in – and there was a question about forgiveness!! --

B) application – we’re called to: 1) live w/ a clear conscience, KNOWING that we’ve been forgiven (I Jn 1:9 – and many other declarations about the character of God) - illus: I’ve given you a new name – or here’s Peter, post-failure: feed my sheep – APP: we need to receive forgiveness and learn to simply say ‘thank you’ – NB: develop the habit of confession – so that you can do what Paul sought to do: the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, and good conscience, and sincere faith – ILLUS: we’re invited to confidence!! 2) – if we really believe in the forgiveness of sins, we must also actively, and even pro-actively forgive others. Matt. 6:12 – “forgive our debts…etc.” – this has individual and collective application….

IV. The Resurrection of the Body and Life Everlasting

A) declaration

B) application – 1) we’re called away from dualism – iow: called to see the physicality of the faith 2) we’re called to live presently in the light of eternity

The year 1871 was a critical one in Mr. Moody's career. He realized more and more how little he was fired by personal acquirements for his work. An intense hunger and thirst for spiritual power were aroused in him by two women who used to attend the meetings and sit on the front seat. He could see by the expression on their faces that they were praying. At the close of services they would say to him:

"We have been praying for you."

"Why don't you pray for the people?" Mr. Moody would ask.

"Because you need the power of the Spirit," they would say.

"I need the power! Why," said Mr. Moody, in relating the incident years after, "I thought I had power. I had the largest congregations in Chicago, and there were many conversions. I was in a sense satisfied. But right along those two godly women kept praying for me, and their earnest talk about anointing for special service set me to thinking. I asked them to come and talk with me, and they poured out their hearts in prayer that I might receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There came a great hunger into my soul. I did not know what it was. I began to cry out as I never did before. I really felt that I did not want to live if I could not have this power for service."

Then the book tells of the great Chicago fire, of D. L. Moody's relief work, the building of the north side tabernacle, and of his visiting in the East to secure funds for his work. Then the narrative continues:

During this Eastern visit the hunger for more spiritual power was still upon Mr. Moody.

"My heart was not in the work of begging," he said. "I could not appeal. I was crying all the time that God would fill me with His Spirit. Well, one day, in the city of New York -- oh, what a day! -- I cannot describe it, I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to name. Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years. I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand. I went to preaching again. The sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you should give me all the world -- it would be as the small dust of the balance."

Notice in the above account, in the words of D. L. Moody himself, that while he had great joy in the coming of the Holy Spirit upon him in power, yet the principal result was:. "The sermons were not different: I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted."

D. L. Moody himself made much of this doctrine that Christians should be filled with the Holy Spirit, or baptized with the Holy Spirit, as he himself often put it.

Let's Try This Again!

Greetings!

Summer is here along with many changes for the Team! Students have left for the summer & even our fearless leader is on a partial sabbatical but the needs and response of our people presses on!
The James preaching series has illicited life-changing responses every week and we look forward to more of the same!

We need more of you to sign up in the kitchenette on the main floor just west of the restrooms. The summer schedules are posted just inside the door -and to the right.

Joe will be away all summer and I will also be away a few Sundays, so I need a few of you to step up and help with meeting the Team just before your service, assigning locations, and then praying together before the service begins. At 9 and 5 the staff is usually in the Prayer Room, too, but the 10:45 group needs to meet on their own. If you can help please contact Sharon ASAP at sgeel@comcast.net.

Summer is a more layed back time but let's TRY to remember to log your prayer activity on the cliboards in the baskets so we can get some idea of the response and whether we are meting it well. Just put your name down and the number of folks you prayed with, along with any info that might help us anticipate further support needs. Thanks sooo much for being diligent with this!

Thank you to those who joined us May 29th! It was great to get together, debrief, and hear how God has been engaging the community at Bethany!

Phil Maulding, Joe, and I will meet this week to begin firming plans for Fall training, a Prayer Retreat, and more, so stay tuned!
In the meantime....
See you at the Throne!

HOLY WEEK HAPPENINGS !!

It's Holy Week in the Christian church calendar!!!-

the week we revisit the final week of Jesus' life and ministry as He makes His way to the Cross to fulfill His created and Divine purpose. Hopefully for those of you who have engaged the spiritual practices of Lent - a time of clearing away the "debris" in our minds and hearts- your anticipation is at a peek and your heart is radiantly and passionately longing for the  Glory-filled crescendo of this spiritual season and the powerfully  poignant dawning of the next!

OR....perhaps not!...
Either way- the varied invitations for reflection on the Last Community Meal, the Garden, arrest, trial, & crucifixion experiences 0f Christ abound, and beckon every soul to consider it's own ultimate response to death itself, and beyond!

But wait!! Perhaps this week is business as usual for you. Perhaps the church calendar, ("whatever!!", you say?), is but a blotchy blurr and the daily stuff of life looms large, shadowing only a faint and far distant image of a special meal, time with family & friends, and the resonant ritual Easter sermon, come Sunday !

I"ve been there! and it reminds me of the story of 5 year old passenger Katie who noticed a billboard alerting her young, impressionable memory that Easter was near. As her mommy responded to the deep sigh in the back seat by checking her rear-view mirror, Katie shreaked, "Mommy, are we getting ready to kill that little baby again, ALREADY!!??"

WOW! Out of the mouths of babes! Sometimes Christmas and Easter seem just a few days apart because life has spun us around like a centrifuge and set us down with our heads and hearts so disoriented we don't even know what's next!!

Well!! The Good news is it's not too late! You can still orient your soul toward the Christ of Holy Week and you don't have to do it alone!
Here are some events you may wish to take in!

1) Prayer Path of the last week of Christ's life! This is an interactive yet highly personal experience mediated with art, music, and much more! The current pastor offered this in San Diego on a college campus and hundreds came every year!

Lenten Reflections of The Heart- Rhythms of Grace

Rhythm plays a crucial part in all of Creation! From the cosmos, to the seasons, to the ways we live, move, and function in our daily lives, we are impacted profoundly by the innate sacred rhythms of God's Creation.

In regard to caring for your own heart (Scripture tells us to "guard" the heart) you have established rhythms of "soul (heart)care" whether you've stopped to recognize them or not! How often do you read "soul food?" How often do you stop and intentionally reflect on your inner life & consider the development and growth of your soul (the part of you that is eternal- according to God's Word!). Whether it's sporadic or a regular routine - it's there- your own "soul care rhythm"!

As Pastor Richard invites us to examine our own hearts in the recent sermon series we are engaging a spiritual rhythm that is Biblically and historically key to soul care- the rhythm of the Church calendar that invites us to revisit annually the "rhythms of grace" in the life of Christ. (see Matt 11:28-29 in The Message- it's beautiful!)

Right now we are in the season of Lent ("spring") when we examine our own hearts clearing away the soul-clutter that has distracted us from our life with God and distorted our images and understandings of God's nature and character. We do this to intentionally create a welcoming space of sacred hospitality to receive fresh, new revelations of the resurrected Christ as we celebrate Easter in just a few more weeks.

As you consider your own heart's condition in preparation to minister to others in prayer - read John 14: 27-30 out loud (slowly) 3 times, listening each time for a word or phrase that seems to catch your attention more than any other. Perhaps you will want to listen for anything regarding the rhythms of your own heart...above all, pay attention to what grabs YOU!

Next, put your Bible down and spend 5 minutes just pondering the word or phrase. What does it mean to you? What about it seems to draw you? What questions, images, memories, or relationships does it bring to mind? What feelings does it evoke? Consider the condition of your own heart in relation to what word or phrase you are drawn to.

Now spend 2-5 minutes telling God what you think about what you have just experienced. ASK your questions, SEEK to tell God your honest and most intimate thoughts, offering them as invitation to engage dialogue with God. Say what you need to say and hold nothing back- God is longing for you to come openly and without reserve.

Finally, LISTEN. Sit quietly and openly for 2-5 minutes and just listen. This may seem hard and awkward but just give it a try and see what happens! Pay attention to your next thoughts and whether or not they are new to you or tend to draw you toward God. If they do - consider if you believe this to be God speaking to you! God is always speaking in one form or another - our part is to ask for increased awareness & then pay attention!! If other thoughts invade the space - just let them go and return to your focus on God as much as you are able.

CLOSE your time thanking God for this encounter and inviting God to encounter others Sunday as begin this ministry of prayer in our worship services. Consider anything you have learned about yourself, God, or others that will impact prayer ministry for you.

May the God of all grace grant you peace, joy, and wisdom as you offer yourself to God and others through the ministry of Prayer!

Important Things to Know as Prayer Team Begins Ministry This Sunday!!

Greetings!
The day has finally arrived!!!

In response to God's Word...

"Beloved, pray for us...
the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you."
(I Thess 5: 25, 28)
You are invited as
This Sunday, March 9th
the Bethany Prayer Team
will formally begin ministry after worship services!!

In final preparation the following may be helpful for Prayer Team Members to navigate the day:

1) For the next 4 weeks we are asking ALL Team Members (who have had training and /or registered their intent with Team Leaders) to please come to the new sanctuary Prayer Room at least 15 minutes prior to the service you will attend. We will gather and meet the entire team for that service, assign teams & positions, and pray for staff & worship team along with those who will minister in prayer that day. This is both a team building and organizational time . Please make every effort to join us! After 4 weeks we will reassess & make regular assignments.

2) You will receive your Bethany Prayer Team lanyard and name tag on Sunday along with our "Protocol for Ministry" document if you were unable to joins us for orientation sessions. It is very important that you review the Protocol for Ministry prior to serving. This will address many questions & issues you may have. Please feel free to contact Joe Westfall or myself if you are a Bethany attender and have NOT completed the training & would like to join the team OR need further assistance.

3) We will place "reserved" signs on seats near the designated ministry stations for your convenience. Under the reserved seats you will find a basket with breath mints, kleenex, pens & response cards, extra lanyards in case you've forgotten yours that day, & other materials for referral or support of those you will pray with. Copies of the Protocol for Ministry document can also be found in the baskets for your reference. If persons you pray with desire any kind of follow-up please have them fill out a response card and place it in the "suggestion" box in the foyer near the Information Table. If YOU are concerned re: follow-up or additional support for the person(s) please speak directly to Sharon, Joe, or Phil Maulding, using our confidentiality guidelines.
When you have finished ministering - PLEASE complete the sheet entitled "Weekly Ministry Assessment" and place it back in the basket. This will help us plan for future services and assess prayer needs of the congregation going forward.

4) This Sunday both Joe and I will be in all services to assist you in any way necessary. If you need support as you pray with folks or have questions please don't hesitate to catch our eye, send another to get us, or do whatever is necessary to gain the support needed both for yourself and those you pray with! Staff members will also be available.

5) The Prayer Room will be the designated place to bring anyone for extended prayer if indicated. Individuals will be there to assist you or stand by as needed.

6) Please feel free to use this blog site to get questions answered, give feedback, or just share what God is doing and any God-revelations you encounter! We are all encouraged and up-lifted by the increased awareness of God's activity among us! PLEASE remember to share NO Names and keep your sharing to how God is engaging and changing YOU through ministry! The folks you pray with will want to tell their OWN stories!! Thank you for imaging God's protective heart!

7) Remember CONFIDENTIALITY is key to this ministry and we are the gatekeepers of the stories of others. This is both privilege and responsibility!!! Guard them well dear friends!! This is a critical image of God and His Kingdom Community we are chartered to impart!

8) and finally! relax and enjoy the process of entering into the care and nurture of others by the power of God's Holy Spirit within you! Remember only God invites encounter and gives revelation, insight, healing. We are simply vessels of GOD's Word and power as it is gifted through us!! When in doubt- pray Blessing and the Fruits of the Spirit into the lives of those you minister to!
Please see note below for options for preparing for ministry.

May God richly bless and anoint you as you seek to make the Kingdom of Christ visible and tangible among us through the infinite Power and Passion of prayer!

new space... post a prayer

It has finally happened. The Bethany Community in Seattle moved into new space today, dedicating the space to Christ and praying together that we would bring the elements of prayer, word, confession and hospitality into this space, in order that Christ might be clearly seen through this community.

The space itself is remarkable, the design of the Miller-Hull partnership in Seattle, and now the work of moving into the space with what I called 'soul furniture' in today's sermon (available here by Monday afternoon) belongs to us.

Though it's rare for me to address the issues of our local church on this blog, I'm inviting anyone to post a prayer for the Bethany community in the comments section, asking that God will shape us as His people in order that His character will be seen with increasing clarity in our life together. I'll start things off by offering this Celtic Prayer, which hangs on the climbing wall in my office:

Kindle in our hearts God The flame of that love which never ceases; That it may burn in us Giving light to others. May we shine forever With your eternal light Even your Son Jesus Christ Our Savior and Redeemer

Thanks in advance to all who are willing to post prayers... we'll collect them and them to the book we're create to mark this chapter of transition.

Cheers...
